Today is Pokémon Day, a special occasion for fans of the popular franchise. During this annual celebration, fans get a glimpse of what’s to come in the Pokémon world for the next year. This year, it was revealed that the next game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, is set to launch for the Nintendo Switch in 2025.

Many fans were excited by this news and speculated whether the game could be one of the first titles on the rumored sequel to Nintendo‘s Switch console, expected to possibly launch next spring.

Clues in the game’s trailer and tweets from the Pokémon Company hinted at a possible simultaneous release, sparking even more speculation about what this could mean for the upcoming console.

However, some fans pointed out that there are already different versions of the Nintendo Switch available, adding to the uncertainty.

Recent entries in the Pokémon series, such as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, faced criticism for performance issues after their launch in 2022. Additionally, the release of Palworld earlier this year, described as “Pokémon with guns,” led some fans to believe that the original Pokémon series was losing its freshness.

Despite these concerns, the response to Pokémon Legends: Z-A has been generally positive. A teaser trailer revealed glimpses of the game, including a computer-generated Pikachu exploring Lumiose City, with other Pokémon seen frolicking in various locations.

One exciting feature teased in the trailer was the return of mega evolutions, which allow players to supercharge their Pokémon. This news delighted many fans who have been eagerly awaiting the return of this popular feature.

During the event, a new app version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game was announced, along with updates to Pokémon Go and other spin-offs. However, with the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A scheduled for 2025, the Nintendo Switch’s release calendar appears relatively quiet.

Nintendo has released some titles recently, such as Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and the upcoming Princess Peach: Showtime!, but beyond remakes of Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, no further in-house titles have been announced.

Despite this, Nintendo has seen great success with the Switch console, having sold almost 140 million units since its release in 2017, surpassing the reported sales of 117 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide.
